Five Tips for Building Independence at Home

Building Independence at Home: Five Practical Tips

For many NDIS participants, developing greater independence at home is a key goal. Whether it is learning to prepare meals, managing household tasks, or building confidence in your personal care routine, every step forward matters. At InLife, we work alongside participants every day through our daily living support services to help them develop the skills and confidence they need to live as independently as possible.

Here are five practical tips to help you get started.

1. Start Small and Build Gradually

Independence is not built overnight. Rather than trying to take on everything at once, focus on one task or skill at a time. For example, if your goal is to cook meals independently, start with something simple like making toast or preparing a sandwich. Once you feel confident, move on to more complex recipes.

Your support workers can assist you by demonstrating tasks first, then stepping back gradually as you gain confidence. This approach, sometimes called graded support, is a proven way to build lasting skills.

2. Organise Your Living Space

A well-organised home makes daily tasks much easier. Consider these ideas:

  • Label cupboards and drawers so you know where everything belongs
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach
  • Use visual checklists or schedules pinned to the fridge or a noticeboard
  • Reduce clutter to make movement around the home safer and more comfortable

An occupational therapist (OT) can conduct a home assessment and recommend modifications or assistive devices that make your environment more accessible. Our therapy and allied health team can connect you with the right professionals. This type of support may be funded under your NDIS plan's capacity building or capital budget.

3. Use Technology to Your Advantage

Technology can be a powerful tool for independence. Smart home devices, medication reminder apps, and voice-activated assistants can all help you manage daily tasks with less reliance on others. Some popular options include:

  • Smart speakers for setting reminders, timers, and alarms
  • Meal planning apps that create shopping lists automatically
  • Video calling tools to stay connected with family and support networks
  • Accessible banking and budgeting apps

If assistive technology would help you, talk to your support coordinator about including it in your NDIS plan. At InLife, we can help you explore which technologies might be the best fit for your needs.

4. Create a Routine That Works for You

Having a consistent daily routine provides structure and helps you feel more in control of your day. Work with your support team to develop a routine that balances your responsibilities, activities, and rest time.

Your routine does not need to be rigid. The aim is to have a general framework that helps you remember tasks and manage your time effectively. Many participants find that a visual schedule displayed somewhere visible in the home is incredibly helpful.

Independence looks different for everyone. What matters is that you are making progress towards the life you want to live, at your own pace.

5. Celebrate Your Progress

Every achievement deserves recognition, no matter how small it may seem. Made your bed every morning this week? That is worth celebrating. Cooked a new meal for the first time? Brilliant. These moments of progress build momentum and motivation.

At InLife, we encourage participants and their support workers to track progress and celebrate milestones together. Keeping a simple journal or progress chart can help you see how far you have come and stay motivated for the journey ahead.

Getting the Right Support

Building independence does not mean doing everything alone. It means having the right support in place so you can develop skills and confidence at your own pace.
