Navigating Transport Options Under the NDIS
Your Guide to NDIS Transport Funding
Transport is one of the most common topics NDIS participants ask about. Getting from A to B is essential for attending appointments, going to work or education, participating in community activities, and simply living your life. Understanding how the NDIS funds transport can help you make the most of your plan and stay connected to the things that matter to you. At InLife, we regularly help participants navigate their transport options, and we are happy to share what we know.
How Transport Is Funded in Your NDIS Plan
Transport funding under the NDIS is typically included in your Core Supports budget, under the sub-category called Transport. The NDIA determines your transport funding based on three levels:
- Level 1: For participants who can use public transport without support but may need some financial assistance.
- Level 2: For participants who can use public transport with support from another person or need to use a taxi or ride-share service for some trips.
- Level 3: For participants who cannot use public transport at all and rely on taxis, ride-share services, or specialised transport for all their travel needs.
The funding amount varies depending on your level and individual circumstances. Keep in mind that transport funding is designed to cover transport related to your disability. It is not intended to cover all of your travel costs.
Types of Transport Available
Depending on your needs and your plan, you may be able to access a range of transport options:
- Public transport: Buses, trains, trams, and ferries. Many states and territories offer concession fares or companion cards for people with disability.
- Taxis and ride-share services: Services like taxis and rideshare apps can be funded through your NDIS transport budget. Some states also offer taxi subsidy schemes.
- Community transport: Local community transport services often provide affordable door-to-door transport for people with disability and older Australians.
- Specialised transport: Wheelchair-accessible vehicles and other modified transport options are available for participants with specific mobility needs.
- Support worker transport: In some cases, your support worker may drive you to activities or appointments as part of your support service. The cost of this transport is typically covered under your core supports.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Transport Funding
Here are some practical suggestions for stretching your transport budget further:
- Plan your week ahead of time and group appointments or outings together to reduce the number of trips
- Explore public transport options and apply for concession cards in your state or territory
- Check whether community transport services are available in your area, as they are often more affordable than taxis
- If you have a support worker accompanying you, discuss the most efficient route and mode of transport
- Keep a log of your transport spending so you can track your budget throughout the plan period
Transport is more than just getting from one place to another. It is the key to accessing your supports, staying connected with your community, and living the life you choose.
What If Your Transport Funding Is Not Enough?
If you find that your transport funding does not cover your needs, there are a few things you can do. First, speak with your support coordinator about whether other parts of your core budget can be used flexibly to cover transport costs. Second, gather evidence of your transport needs (such as appointment schedules and receipts) and raise this at your next plan review. The more evidence you can provide, the stronger your case for increased transport funding.
