NDIS Support for Down Syndrome

Nurturing independence and community connection for people with Down syndrome

Understanding Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 21. It is one of the most common chromosomal conditions in Australia, and people with Down syndrome may experience intellectual disability, delayed speech and language development, and certain health conditions including heart defects, thyroid issues, and hearing or vision difficulties. However, with appropriate support and opportunities, people with Down syndrome lead active, meaningful lives — attending school, holding jobs, forming relationships, and contributing to their communities.

InLife supports people with Down syndrome across all stages of life, from early childhood therapy and school-age skill building through to adult employment, independent living, and community participation. We focus on what each person can achieve and tailor our support to help them reach their full potential, whatever that looks like for them.

Our approach is warm, patient, and positive. We use clear, accessible communication and break down goals into achievable steps. We celebrate milestones and build on strengths, always with an emphasis on choice, dignity, and fun. For families, we provide a trusted partnership — keeping you informed, involved, and confident that your loved one is receiving support that truly reflects their personality and aspirations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about NDIS support for Down Syndrome.

At what age can my child start receiving NDIS support for Down syndrome?

Children with Down syndrome can access NDIS support from birth. The NDIS Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) pathway provides funding for therapies and supports during the critical early years. InLife can help connect your family with speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy services as early as needed.

Can InLife help my adult child with Down syndrome find work?

Yes. Our Employment and Training services are specifically designed to help people with disability find meaningful employment. For participants with Down syndrome, this includes vocational profiling, workplace readiness programs, resume and interview support, employer engagement, and ongoing on-the-job coaching to ensure placements are successful and sustainable.

How does InLife support the health needs of people with Down syndrome?

People with Down syndrome may have co-occurring health conditions that require monitoring and management. Our support workers are trained to recognise changes in health and wellbeing, coordinate medical appointments, support medication routines, and communicate with families and health professionals. For participants with complex health needs, our nursing team provides additional clinical oversight.

What social and recreational activities does InLife offer?

We offer both one-on-one and group-based community participation programs. Activities are tailored to individual interests and might include sports, art, cooking classes, music, outings to local attractions, and social groups. Our goal is to help participants build genuine friendships and feel a sense of belonging in their community.
