Self-Managed vs Plan-Managed vs Agency-Managed

Understanding Your NDIS Plan Management Options

When you receive your NDIS plan, one of the most important decisions you will make is how your funding is managed. The NDIS offers three plan management options: self-managed, plan-managed, and agency-managed (also known as NDIA-managed). Each option has its own advantages, and the right choice depends on your personal preferences, confidence, and circumstances. If you are still getting to grips with the basics, our guide to understanding your first NDIS plan is a great starting point. At InLife, we support participants under all three management types and can help you understand which option might work best for you.

Option 1: Self-Managed

When you self-manage your NDIS plan, you take full control of your funding. This means you:

  • Pay your service providers directly and claim reimbursement from the NDIA through the myplace portal
  • Can choose any provider, whether they are registered with the NDIS or not
  • Keep your own financial records and receipts
  • Have maximum flexibility and choice over how your funding is used

Self-management suits people who want the most control and are comfortable managing finances and paperwork. It also gives you access to a wider range of providers, which can be a significant advantage in areas where registered providers are limited.

Things to consider: Self-management requires strong organisational skills and an understanding of the NDIS Price Guide. You are responsible for ensuring that your spending aligns with your plan and the NDIS rules. Our NDIS funding estimator can help you plan your budget effectively.

Option 2: Plan-Managed

With plan management, a registered plan manager handles the financial side of your NDIS plan on your behalf. Your plan manager will:

  • Receive and pay invoices from your service providers
  • Keep track of your spending and provide regular budget statements
  • Handle the financial paperwork and claims
  • Allow you to use both registered and unregistered providers

Plan management is a popular choice because it offers a balance of flexibility and support. You still get to choose your providers (including unregistered ones), but you do not have to worry about the financial administration. The cost of plan management is funded separately in your plan and does not come out of your other support budgets.

Things to consider: While plan management reduces your administrative burden, you will still need to make decisions about which providers to use and how to allocate your funding across services.

Option 3: Agency-Managed (NDIA-Managed)

With agency management, the NDIA manages your funding directly. This means:

  • Your service providers submit claims directly to the NDIA for payment
  • You can only use registered NDIS providers
  • The NDIA handles all financial administration
  • You have less flexibility in provider choice compared to the other options

Agency management is the simplest option from an administrative perspective. It suits participants who prefer a hands-off approach or who may not feel ready to manage finances independently.

Things to consider: The main limitation is that you can only use NDIS-registered providers, which may reduce your choices, particularly in regional or remote areas.

Can You Mix and Match?

Yes! Many participants choose a combination of management types. For example, you might self-manage your core supports while having a plan manager handle your capacity building budget. This gives you flexibility where you want it and support where you need it.

There is no right or wrong way to manage your NDIS plan. The best option is the one that gives you the most confidence and control over your supports.
