Understanding Your First NDIS Plan
Your First NDIS Plan: A Friendly Guide
Receiving your first National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan is a significant milestone. Whether you applied for access yourself or a family member helped you through the process, seeing your plan for the first time can feel both exciting and overwhelming. At InLife, we have supported hundreds of participants through this very moment, and we want to help you feel confident about the journey ahead.
What Is an NDIS Plan?
Your NDIS plan is a document created by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) that outlines your goals, the supports you need, and the funding allocated to help you achieve those goals. It is tailored specifically to you and your circumstances, and it typically lasts for 12 months before a plan review takes place.
Your plan will include information about:
- Your personal details and your disability
- Your goals and aspirations
- The supports funded in your plan, organised into budget categories
- How your plan is managed (self-managed, plan-managed, or agency-managed)
Understanding Your Budget Categories
NDIS funding is divided into three main support budget categories:
- Core Supports: These cover your everyday needs, such as assistance with daily living, transport, consumables, and social and community participation. Core funding is generally flexible, meaning you can move funds between core sub-categories.
- Capacity Building Supports: These are designed to help you build your skills and independence over time. They may include support coordination, improved daily living (such as occupational therapy), employment support, and more. Capacity building funding is not flexible between categories.
- Capital Supports: This category funds higher-cost items like assistive technology, home modifications, or specialist disability accommodation. Capital funding is allocated for specific purposes and cannot be moved.
How to Read Your Plan
When you first log into the NDIS participant portal (myplace), you will see a summary of your plan. Take your time to read through each section. If anything is unclear, your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or support coordinator can help you interpret the details.
Pay close attention to the stated amounts in each budget line. These figures represent the total funding available for the life of your plan, not a monthly or weekly amount. Our team at InLife always recommends dividing your total funding by the number of weeks in your plan to get a clear picture of what you can spend each week. You can also use our NDIS funding estimator to help you understand your budget breakdown.
Choosing Your Providers
One of the most empowering aspects of the NDIS is the ability to choose who delivers your supports. You can select registered providers, and if you are self-managed or plan-managed, you can also use unregistered providers. When choosing a provider, consider:
- Their experience with your type of disability
- Whether they offer the specific services you need
- Their location and availability
- Reviews or recommendations from other participants
- Whether their values align with yours
Setting Meaningful Goals
Your NDIS plan revolves around your goals. These might include things like learning to cook independently, joining a community group, finding employment, or improving your physical health. Services like daily living support can help you work towards these goals with the right guidance. At InLife, we encourage participants to think about what matters most to them and to set goals that are specific, measurable, and meaningful.
Remember, your plan is about you. It should reflect your life, your choices, and your aspirations. Do not be afraid to speak up about what you want to achieve.
