Your Guide to NDIS Support Coordination
What Is NDIS Support Coordination?
Navigating the NDIS can be complex, and that is where support coordination comes in. Support coordination is a funded service within your NDIS plan that helps you understand, implement, and make the most of your plan. A support coordinator acts as your guide, connecting you with the right providers, helping you overcome barriers, and building your confidence to manage your own supports over time. At InLife, our support coordinators are passionate about empowering participants to take charge of their NDIS journey.
The Three Levels of Support Coordination
The NDIS offers three levels of support coordination, each designed for different needs:
- Support Connection: This is the most basic level. It helps you understand your plan and connects you with providers and community services. It is usually provided by a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) rather than a funded support coordinator.
- Support Coordination (Level 2): This is the most common level. A dedicated support coordinator works with you to implement your plan, find and connect with service providers, address barriers, and build your capacity to coordinate your own supports over time.
- Specialist Support Coordination (Level 3): This is the highest level, designed for participants with complex or high-risk situations. A specialist support coordinator manages challenges such as housing crises, justice system involvement, or complex health needs, and works to stabilise the participant's situation.
What Does a Support Coordinator Do?
A support coordinator wears many hats. Their role may include:
- Helping you understand your NDIS plan and budget
- Researching and connecting you with service providers that suit your needs
- Coordinating between multiple providers and services
- Troubleshooting issues with providers or the NDIA
- Preparing you for your plan review
- Building your skills and confidence to manage your own supports
- Connecting you with mainstream and community services outside the NDIS
- Advocating for your needs and rights
The ultimate goal of support coordination is to build your capacity so that, over time, you need less support to manage your plan. However, many participants benefit from ongoing support coordination across multiple plan periods, and that is perfectly fine.
How Support Coordination Is Funded
Support coordination is funded under the Capacity Building budget in your NDIS plan, specifically in the Support Coordination category. The funding covers the cost of your support coordinator's time, including meetings, phone calls, research, and coordination activities.
Not every NDIS plan includes support coordination. If you feel that you would benefit from this service but it is not in your current plan, raise it at your next plan review. Evidence from your support team about the complexity of your needs and the value that support coordination would add can strengthen your case.
A good support coordinator does not just help you use your plan. They empower you to understand it, advocate for yourself, and build the skills to manage your own supports with confidence.
Choosing the Right Support Coordinator
Your support coordinator should be someone you trust and feel comfortable with. When choosing a support coordinator, consider:
- Their experience with your type of disability or support needs
- Their knowledge of local services and providers in your area
- Their communication style and availability
- Whether they listen to you and respect your choices
- Feedback from other participants or families
